Creating Safer Communities
According to the Mobile Police Department (MPD), since 2000 violent and non-violent crime in the MLK community has decreased by 50 percent. One of MPD's goals has been to forge a partnership with the community to enhance public safety and the quality of life of the citizens. As MLKARC's community revitalization strategies continue to positively impact the appeal and spirit of the community, the criminal element has been forced to move because citizens are taking more pride in the neighborhood and have become less tolerant of criminal behavior. MLKARC has purchased and demolished many of the vacant dilapidated houses previously used for illicit activities. The city of Mobile has also demolished a number of dilapidated structures over the years where criminal activity was rampant. Based on MPD's crime data, it's evident that when public safety and the community work together, neighborhoods become safer places to live, work, and play.
