2014 Financial Education Program

Because low credit scores are rampant in Low-Moderate Income (LMI) communities throughout the country, many LMI persons frequently experience housing, employment, insurance and credit denials.  However, when credit is granted the costs are usually exorbitant due their poor credit rating.  Consequently, MLKARC forged partnerships with the Alabama Power Foundation and PNC in the spring of 2013 to help area LMI residents acquire the money management skills necessary to avoid scams, stay out of debt, and build assets.  The Alabama Power Foundation and PNC made financial contributions toward the creation of the Money Smart for Adults Financial Education Program.  During the Money Smart for Adults instructor-led sessions, LMI residents receive financial training from eleven Money Smart modules covering a variety of topics including deposit and credit services offered by financial institutions, choosing and maintaining a checking account, spending plans, the importance of saving, how to obtain and use credit effectively, and the basics of building or repairing credit.  The once monthly Money Smart for Adults training sessions are held on the third Tuesday from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm in the Delchamps Theater on the Main Campus of the Bishop State Community College.  To register for the free classes, contact MLKARC at 251.432.3073.
